This role is ideal for midwives who want hands-on clinical experience while supporting vulnerable mothers, newborns, and young people.

Purpose of the Role

The main goal of this position is to improve maternal, newborn, child, and reproductive health services, especially for refugee populations such as those in Mahama Camp.

As a midwife, you will provide quality primary healthcare, support safe deliveries, and educate mothers and youth on reproductive health.

Main Duties and Responsibilities (Explained Simply)

Antenatal Care (Before Birth)

  • Welcome pregnant women attending antenatal clinics
  • Conduct routine pregnancy checkups following national guidelines
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and refer when necessary
  • Provide iron supplements and ensure tetanus vaccination
  • Record patient information correctly in health registers

Postnatal Care (After Birth)

  • Check the health of mothers after delivery
  • Provide Vitamin A supplements to breastfeeding mothers
  • Educate mothers on nutrition, breastfeeding, and newborn care
  • Refer babies for immunization services

Family Planning and Post-Abortion Care

  • Offer family planning services based on national protocols
  • Explain all available methods so clients can choose freely
  • Screen clients for infections and other health concerns

Delivery and Emergency Care

  • Conduct normal deliveries safely
  • Monitor labor using approved medical tools
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies with doctors and nurses
  • Stabilize and refer serious cases when needed

Infection Prevention

  • Follow strict infection control standards
  • Use proper sterilization and waste management practices
  • Maintain clean and safe delivery environments

Health Education and Youth Services

  • Provide health education to mothers and patients
  • Offer adolescent and youth-friendly services (ASRH)
  • Support community health educators and youth programs

Other Tasks

  • Carry out additional duties assigned by supervisors when necessary

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma in Midwifery
  • Valid license recognized by NCNM Rwanda

Experience and Skills (Essential)

  • Experience working in health centers or hospitals
  • Training in maternal, newborn, child health and reproductive health
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse communities

Experience working with Save the Children is an added advantage.

Additional Skills That Are an Advantage

  • At least 2 years of experience in MNCH & RH services
  • Experience in humanitarian or refugee settings
  • Skills in antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, and ASRH
  • Language skills in Kinyarwanda, English, and French
